What should I include in my CV?Creating a strong CV is essential to make a positive impression on potential employers. At ELFIN, we recommend including the following key elements in your CV to ensure it is professional, concise, and tailored to the job you are applying for: 1. Personal Information Include your full name, a professional email address, and your phone number at the top of your CV. If relevant to the role or required by the employer, you can also add your city or region of residence. Avoid unnecessary details such as your full address, marital status, or photograph unless specifically requested (in line with anti-discrimination and GDPR laws). 2. Professional Summary Write a concise, tailored summary (2–3 sentences) that highlights your most relevant skills, experience, and achievements. This section should clearly communicate your value to the employer and align with the job requirements. Avoid broad statements like "I am looking for a role to develop myself" and instead focus on specific, measurable accomplishments and your ability to contribute to the role Tips for Writing a Strong Professional Summary Tailor It to the Job Posting: Use keywords from the job description and highlight the skills or experiences most relevant to the role. Focus on Value: Clearly state how you will contribute to the company, such as solving problems, increasing efficiency, or achieving measurable results. Keep It Specific and Measurable: Mention quantifiable achievements (e.g., "increased sales by 30%" or "reduced processing times by 20%") to make your experience stand out. Avoid Vague or Generic Phrases: Replace clichés like "I want to grow professionally" with results-driven statements that demonstrate your impact. 3. Work Experience List your professional experience in reverse chronological order (most recent first). For each position, include: Job Title: Clearly state your role. Company Name and Location: Provide the name of the organization and its location. Dates of Employment: Use months and years (e.g., March 2020 – Present). Key Responsibilities and Achievements: Use bullet points to describe your tasks and accomplishments, focusing on measurable results or specific outcomes. Example: Spearheaded a project to optimize website performance, reducing load times by 35% and increasing user retention by 20%. Led a team of 5 developers in delivering a customer portal used by 10,000+ active users. 4. Education and Qualifications Include your academic background, starting with the most recent: Degree/Certification: Specify the qualification (e.g., Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing). Institution Name and Location: State the university or institution. Dates Attended: Mention the years of attendance. Key Achievements: If applicable, include notable accomplishments (e.g., graduating with honors or relevant coursework). 5. Skills Highlight your core skills relevant to the job, such as technical skills, language proficiency, or soft skills. Use bullet points or a list format to make it easy to read. Consider splitting into categories if applicable: Technical Skills: Programming languages, software, tools (e.g., AutoCAD, CRM software). Languages: Indicate fluency levels (e.g., Fluent in German, Intermediate English). Soft Skills: Communication, leadership, problem-solving. 6. Certifications and Training (Optional) If you’ve completed additional certifications or training relevant to the role, include them here. Examples include industry-specific courses, technical certifications, or language qualifications (e.g., SAP Certification, Project Management Professional). 7. Volunteer Experience or Extracurricular Activities (Optional) If you’ve participated in volunteer work, internships, or other non-professional activities that demonstrate transferable skills, add them to this section. This is especially useful for early-career candidates or career changers. 8. Hobbies and Interests (Optional) This section is not mandatory but can help showcase your personality or cultural fit for the company. Stick to hobbies relevant to the job or those that demonstrate soft skills (e.g., team sports, learning new technologies, or public speaking). 9. References It’s not necessary to list references directly on your CV. Instead, add a statement like: "References available upon request." This keeps your CV clean and concise while allowing you to provide references when needed. (This also prevents your references contact information being extracted onto ATS Systems.) Additional Tips for a Strong CV: Tailor Your CV: Always prioritize tailoring your CV for each job application. Highlight the most relevant experiences and skills for the specific role, particularly for technical roles where showcasing all applicable expertise is crucial. Use an ATS-Friendly Format: Since our ATS system automatically extracts information, we recommend submitting your CV in PDF format with simple formatting. Avoid excessive graphics, columns, or non-standard fonts, as they can interfere with the extraction process. Emphasize Readability: Use clear section headings, bullet points, and plenty of white space for easy readability. Recruiters often skim CVs, so ensure the most critical information is easily accessible. Include Relevant Technical Points: For technical roles, ensure all relevant tools, methodologies, and technologies are listed. Don’t hesitate to expand your CV to 2–3 pages if necessary, as long as the content is directly related to the position. Keep it Professional: Use a clean, professional layout with consistent formatting and a professional tone. Avoid slang, unnecessary jargon, or overly personal details. Proofread Thoroughly: Ensure your CV is free of typos, grammatical errors, and outdated information. Attention to detail reflects professionalism. By following these guidelines, you’ll create a compelling CV that not only highlights your strengths but also aligns with the technical requirements of the job and optimizes your chances of being noticed by both our ATS system and hiring managers.

Do I need a cover letter? What should I include? While not always mandatory, a well-crafted cover letter can enhance your application by providing additional context and helping to personalize your submission. At ELFIN, we focus on reviewing CVs first to assess if candidates meet the main requirements. However, a tailored cover letter can strengthen your application by showcasing your enthusiasm, elaborating on key achievements, and explaining why you’re an excellent fit for the role. What to include in a Cover letter: Introduction: Mention the role you’re applying for and why it interests you. Additional Context: Use the cover letter to share information not typically included in your CV, such as your motivation for the role, relevant volunteer work, or career transitions. This helps personalize your application and highlight your unique value. Key Achievements: Highlight specific accomplishments that align with the job requirements. Tailored Fit: Explain how your skills and experience meet the employer’s needs. Closing: End with a polite, enthusiastic statement and your availability for an interview. Final Touch: Proofreading Review your cover letter carefully before submission to ensure it’s free of typos, grammatical errors, or formatting issues. An error-free, professional letter reflects attention to detail and leaves a positive impression. Keep your cover letter concise (no more than one page) and always tailor it to the specific job. By adding relevant personal context, you can stand out from other candidates and make a stronger connection with the employer.
